Zone of Comfort

Handwritten note showing zone of comfort and stepping in to courage

One of my favourite Brene Brown quotes is “You can choose courage, or you can choose comfort”.

Today I encourage you to think about your current situation and ask whether you are choosing courage or comfort.

It hasn’t always been easy, but I believe for most of my career thus far, I have chosen courage. Often, behind that courage, my driving force is discomfort. If I have come to the end of the time that I am happy in a role, or have felt my career wasn’t progressing, then I have felt (often quite deeply) discomfort. My approach to projects and my own professional development has also seen me choosing courage and pushing myself out of my comfort zone.

It turns out that discomfort is a great driver for me to step into courage. For me the choice of staying in discomfort or being brave has always resulted in me choosing courage.

I am not here to tell everyone they need to be courageous, but I urge you to think about the things that are happening in your life and in your work and to ask yourself are you choosing comfort or courage?

Maybe you are not even facing a significant challenge such as switching roles, perhaps you could just ask yourself this question in the way you go about your work today.
