Experimenting and professional development

It’s funny how you can do something so many times but often don’t realise how important it is to you.

I have just been for an evening walk after a long day sat at my desk and popped on a podcast. I have spoken before about how I am a fan of podcasts and how they are important to my professional development. But I wasn’t expecting to feel the way I do right now.

I listened to the Squiggly Careers podcast by Sarah Ellis and Helen Tupper. This is a particular favourite podcast of mine and episode 277 was no exception.  The episode focussed on how you can use experiments to accelerate your career development.

What struck me was a realisation that I have been undertaking experiments both in my career and my jobs for years, and although each one was very conscious, I had never really seen the bigger picture of how important experiments have been for me.

Listening to the podcast I reflected on the many times I have changed an approach in my day-to-day work, I have been bold in my approach to an appeal or have turned things on their head. So often these moves have reaped big rewards, and a few have not been so successful but have offered many lessons to be learnt.

I have also been doing this in my career, for example spending the past couple of years in a hybrid situation with mainly employment and a little self-employment added into the mix ahead of the big jump in 2021 to flip that balance.

It was also really interesting for me to reflect on some of my values and how they link to this topic. Values of creativity, flexibility and freedom are very well served with experimenting, challenging the status quo and thinking outside of the box.

So whether you are looking to shake things up in your job and the projects you are involved with or you are thinking about your broader career, I highly recommend you go and check out this episode of Squiggly Careers.

I doubt you read this Helen and Sarah, but if you do, thank you for your amazing podcast, books and resources.
